CELEBRATIONS

A Giant dragon puppet created by the community young people for their first annual New Years Eve Family Celebration and Parade in Manzanita. The 2006- 2008 parades were hosted by Fulcrum Community Resources.
NETWORKING POTLUCKS
- Pine Grove Too - Fulcrum sponsored the first of the long awaited revival of the old North Coast Notes community potlucks at the Pine Grove Community House in Manzanita in February 2010. The event is now a second formal potluck of the Pine Grove Community House. Held on the second Monday of each month, we share news of recent and upcoming happenings and see what wants to unfold next. Often there is a speaker. Bring a favorite dish to share and your own plates, bowls, cups, and utensils.
- Safety Net – Mike Cook from NeahCasa’s Student Family Housing Program organized and Fulcrum co-hosted this March, 2009 gathering to discuss local implications of the economic hard times. Everyone agreed that requests were up both in numbers and the dollar amounts needed. Who gets lost between the cracks and what can various local organizations do about it? The meeting room at NCRD was packed with County-wide governmental agencies, non-profits, funding sources and interested individuals. No magic answers were found but a lot of information got shared and connections made.
- Non-Profit Gatherings – June and September 2008. Local organizations have a lot to share on many topics. Just going around the table and saying what we’re up to can be eye-opening. Many issues are similar – need for volunteers, funding, board training….
- Non-profit Bookkeeping – In the Spring of 2007 Fulcrum held its first open gathering, a session with Karen Ruddick-Yurka on setting up accounts so that boards can monitor their organizations financial situation.
ALTERNATIVE GIVING – a Different Way to Look at Economic Development
- Neahkahnie Community Treasure Chest – A long held dream of creating a local granting foundation for special projects is beginning to come true. Barbara and Chuck McLaughlin have contributed donations from their BBQ list supports to begin the fund. It’s still very small but it’s growing. Bequests and donations are welcome.
- Local Investment Guild – We are always looking to help community members invest locally in creative ways that contribute to our common wellbeing. In 2006 Fulcrum hosted a series of gatherings in the Fireplace Room at NCRD that centered on micro-business and community housing. In 2009 Fulcrum members were instrumental in setting up an LLC with 10 private investors to land-bank a property for future NeahCasa affordable housing. Another gathering is in the offing for Spring 2010. Contact us if you are interested in investment opportunities or have investment expertise of one sort or another.
- Alternative Gift Fair – Started by Ginger Salkowski in 2006, this is event takes place early in December. It is a way for folks to buy donations to local and international organizations to gift to their loved ones in lieu of a material present. Local groups set up tables to explain their projects and sometimes sell products, while volunteers staff the international programs. Fulcrum originally helped with cashiering and by 2009 was a major organizer of the event.
- Giving Guide – This brainchild of Julianne Johnson has yet to get off the ground in a major way. But wouldn’t it be cool to have a pamphlet or sheet listing local non-profits, their missions and their needs that could be handed out to newcomers and visitors alike? It’s just waiting for a volunteer to take it on….
VISIONING

These cooperative community visioning murals were created by many community members in a series of sessions during 2005.
The original year long project was was organized by Lane deMoll and Glenna Gray, and sponsored by the Lower Nehalem Community Trust with funding from the Arts Build Communities program of the Oregon Arts Commission. The murals are currently located at Alder Creek Farm between Manzanita and Nehalem.
Building on this effort, Fulcrum continues to explore a variety of creative processes to help create and manifest visions for our common future.
Estuary Trail - In 2004, Tom Bender initiated discussions with the State Park, local property owners and local stakeholders for developing a community pedestrian and biking trail joining Manzanita, Nehalem Bay State Park, Nehalem and Wheeler. The project is currently on hold.
