Smiley Salmon Harvest works with the fish hatchery and the Oregon Food Bank to catch and can hatchery Coho from fish traps for distribution to those in need. Local Neah-Kah-Nie High School students design can labels as a class project and are added during can labeling parties. The nonprofit is sponsored through Fulcrum Community Foundation to process donations and grants. Over 8,000 tins of 7.5 oz canned, local Coho Salmon were distributed in 2021. This is locally sourced fish goes directly to those in our community most. The foodbanks love having the canned salmon that’s easily stored and has a long shelf life, with a small carbon footprint.
